Previously, pinschers were widely distributed throughout Central Europe. They were the dogs of coachmen, stables, and traveling merchants. Coaches needed a dog capable of covering long distances that could reliably and effectively guard the cart and cargo, even at night after a long day’s journey. These dogs had to develop a keen sense of ownership. They had to independently and confidently protect their owner’s property, a mindset that can still be seen in pinschers today. The common ancestors of our pinschers and schnauzers evolved into extremely resilient dogs while performing this task. When the horses were unhitched in the stable, the work of these dogs was not yet finished. In addition to guard duty, our pinschers also cleaned barns of mice and rats. This gave rise to their designations “Stallpinscher” or “Rattler.” 120 years ago, all the pinscher and schnauzer breeds we know today were categorized under this group. The Austrian pinscher descends from the old Austrian landpinscher, which, until the end of the 19th century, was popular as a reliable and versatile helper on farms. Organized breeding of this breed began in the early 20th century.
During the first decades of the 20th century, landpinschers from Lower Austria gained recognition as outstanding dogs. This breed of dogs was widely distributed in Central and Southeastern Europe. Unlike many modern breeds that have emerged through diverse crossbreeding, the Austrian pinscher, similar to its German predecessor, represents, in some sense, an archetype of an ancient breed. Despite inevitable accidental crossbreeding, it largely retains its original characteristics. This gives it significant value for cynology. After all, this is the only indigenous non-hunting dog breed in Austria that was officially recognized as a separate breed by the FCI in 1955.
