Description of the Breed

Cats from the territory of modern Thailand have always been distinct from all other breeds. They are often associated with numerous legends, some of which bear no relation to reality, yet are incredibly beautiful. Additionally, it is not only their appearance that sets them apart from the vast array of other cats, but also their unique temperament. Their loyalty to their owners and extraordinary devotion elevate them to the status of exquisite pets.

Khao Manee is one such cat, hailing from Siam (present-day Thailand). Many rumors surround it. It is claimed to be one of the oldest breeds mentioned in ancient texts. The tenderness and affection with which it is regarded in Thailand is simply astonishing. Locals assert that Khao Manee brings luck and prosperity to the home it inhabits. For many centuries, these graceful creatures were accessible only to royal families and nobility. However, let’s examine some historical facts related to this “modern type of oriental breed,” as it is also referred to.

Thus, the unprecedented popularity of Khao Manee has always been linked to legends of prosperity, and these cats were considered true treasures, enjoying numerous privileges. Exporting them outside the country was prohibited. However, due to reforms that took place in Siam, some animals were smuggled abroad, where they gained popularity in other countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States of America. There, breeders began working with Siamese cats and selecting them to enhance the breed.

In the course of this work, breeders unexpectedly encountered changes in the coloration of the ears, face, and tail of the offspring. These cats exhibited pure white ears, face, and tail, creating an interesting contrast with the patterns on the rest of their body.

Cat fanciers became intrigued by this feature and began to breed the cats, striving to solidify these characteristics. Thus, in the early 1960s, a new breed emerged – Khao Manee. It stunned many specialists with its exotic appearance. Furthermore, it was later noted that such cats possess a unique energy and can indeed alter the prosperity of the household they inhabit.

This breed initially received “provisional recognition” status in 1968 from the World Cat Federation (WCF), and was then officially recognized by global feline organizations.Purchasing a kitten from a cattery in Russia is not so easy, as there are still not many breeders offering such cats. Online, there are ads for Khao Manee kittens, but good genetics cannot be guaranteed in such animals. It’s worth noting the high cost of Khao Manee kittens, which can exceed 50,000 rubles and reach up to 120,000 rubles, while ideal show-class kittens are sold at a negotiated price.

Appearance

This is one of the rarest breeds, highly valued not only for its elegant appearance but also for its unique charm and temperament. Therefore, choosing a kitten from a cattery is not that simple. Despite all its advantages, not every white cat can bear the name Khao Manee. Experts describe its exterior as a medium-sized cat with a solid white coat. Its impressive appearance is particularly noted, and in some sources, it is compared to a domestic lion. In special cases, heterochromia is allowed, but it is not a defining feature, rather it is an exception. Interestingly, Khao Manee has an unofficial second name, which translates to “diamond eye.” There is a clear sexual dimorphism: females stand about 20-23 cm tall at the shoulder, while males can reach from 25 to 27 cm, with average weights of 3.5-4 kg and 4-5 kg, respectively. Sociable, affectionate, truly special-these words aptly describe Khao Manee. It is a pet for true aesthetes and can be by its owner’s side for 13-15 years or even longer. They are very intelligent, adaptable, sociable, and enjoy “talking,” but in a subtle and quiet manner. They are rightly considered a valuable adornment, as the aesthetic pleasure

Отличительные черты

Голова

Small in size, it resembles a wedge with a wide base more than a square. All lines are smooth, with a rounded outline when viewed from any side. The chin and stop are not clearly defined. Cats have plump whisker pads. The forehead is slightly rounded and elongated.

Морда

When viewed from the side, it is straight, without any distortions or bends. It is slightly shorter than the width of the head, making it a shortened variant of the Siamese breed. The moderately long straight nose smoothly transitions into a rounded forehead. The tip of the nose is not large. In females, the whisker pads are noticeably smaller.

Уши

Not very large. The base is also of medium width, set quite high, and slightly rounded at the tips. It can't be called a wide ear placement either. However, if the size of the ears varies to a greater or lesser extent, this is not considered a significant flaw.

Глаза

Breed profile. The eyes are shiny, with the outer edge slightly raised, and the shape resembles an almond. The iris can be a bright emerald, amber, or blue color. Heterochromia is also observed.

Зубы

They play an important role in the appearance of Khao Manee. There should be a full set of teeth - 30 teeth, including 18 upper and 12 lower. The teeth must be white, strong, and properly aligned. A well-defined jaw looks powerful, ensuring a complete closure of the teeth.

Корпус

Not large, closer to medium, muscular, and proportionately built. The back is straight, strong, and flexible. The chest is broad and deep, ensuring a healthy heart and lungs. Sexual dimorphism is clearly visible, with females being noticeably more graceful and refined.

Конечности

Slim, straight, with good musculature. Quite long, with the hind legs being longer than the front ones. Both front and hind paws are very strong, providing the cat with a quick start and a high jump when needed. The paw pads are oval-shaped, with the toes slightly bent inward. Well-formed paws are positioned on four points, giving the cat a stable stance.

Хвост

The tail of Khao Manee should be of medium length, proportional to the body. It should be straight at the base and become slightly thinner towards the end. The tail should be covered with short, smooth, and shiny fur, giving it an elegant appearance.

Шерсть

Short, very pleasant to the touch. When born, it is silky and shiny. Adult cats maintain these qualities for life. It should be dense and fit closely to the body. It requires almost no special care; regular brushing is quite sufficient.

Окрас

The breed's name reflects its color: it is definitively pure white. No spots or stripes are allowed; the whiter, the better. At birth, there may be small marks of a different color, which disappear by six months. A pink nose and paw pads look excellent against the snow-white fur.

Character

Sophisticated appearance, rarity, and unique temperament-this is all about the Khao Manee. They are very energetic, playful, accommodating, and adoring of their owner, becoming not just a pet and a decoration for the home but also an excellent companion during travels, playtime with children, and even with other pets. Their attachment to their owners could inspire legends-they love spending time with them. Curious, very smart, and attentive, they are always ready to take part in family activities, investigating the contents of shopping bags. Their ease in adapting to new environments is truly impressive. They enjoy talking and eagerly await responses to their purrs.

As noted earlier, the white Khao Manee easily establish good relationships with other pets. However, to ensure proper socialization, they should initially be kept in quarantine and introduced to other cats and dogs under supervision. If done correctly, they will live in harmony with cats of other breeds, dogs, or even small animals. However, this does not apply to rodents and birds, as the Khao Manee, although well-mannered, is a predator. It is worth noting that some cats may display dominant behavior during mating.

Khao Manee are renowned for their love of children and their patience during playtime. They can handle noisy and persistent children with ease and are practically perfect as babysitters for young kids. However, it’s important to teach children to interact appropriately with animals from an early age. Children should understand that cats require gentle treatment and care during play.

It should be noted that Khao Manee typically do not show aggression, but they can become true warriors if they feel scared or are defending their territory. If they do not receive enough engagement, they may become irritable or display destructive behavior. In critical situations, when problematic behavior becomes unmanageable, it is recommended to consult an animal psychologist to help your cat cope with stress and discomfort.

Dependence on their owner can lead to stress when they are left alone for long periods. It is advisable to give your Khao Manee plenty of attention and to leave toys available during your absence.

Congenital deafness

25 - 30% of Khao Manee cats are born completely deaf.

Care and Maintenance

The Khao Manee breed requires minimal care but brings a unique aura to the home. They quickly and easily adapt to new living conditions. However, purchasing a kitten from a breeder doesn’t mean it will just be a toy for entertainment. To ensure comfortable living conditions, you need to carefully select a diet and feed it a balanced, high-quality holistic or super-premium food. Breeders often recommend the foods they use themselves upon purchase. Alternatively, you can consult a veterinarian for portion sizing and feeding frequency recommendations. Pay special attention to providing fresh water, which should be available to the animal 24 hours a day.

Acquire a suitable litter box and place it in a quiet location so that your “white snow” can comfortably carry out its rituals. It’s advisable to choose a spacious litter box with removable sides or even a litter house, although this may require more effort for changing the filler. Khao Manee are known for being clean and may be somewhat picky about litter. Pine wood litter has proven to be safe for kittens and offers good absorption.

Check Khao Manee’s teeth weekly for plaque build-up. If feeding natural food, it’s highly recommended to clean the cat’s teeth to prevent tartar formation. If using dry kibble, teeth cleaning is not necessary as the kibble serves this function. Clean the ears with a soft cloth or cotton swab, using a special ear cleaning solution. Clean the eyes as needed during daily checks, and if there is any discharge, a visit to the veterinarian is advised. If necessary, trim your cat’s claws even if you have a scratching post at home. This doesn’t need to be done frequently, but approximately once every two weeks, trim about a third of the claw. Be careful during this process to avoid damaging blood vessels inside.

The “white diamonds” are considered very active cats, so they need plenty of space and toys to play with. It makes sense to set up vertical surfaces at home so they can engage their natural instincts and strengthen their paws and claws.

Socialization is very important for Khao Manee. They are friendly cats that are people-oriented. Spend enough time with them and involve children in play. They expect affection and interaction from their surroundings. They get along well with other animals, but initially, ensure that no conflicts arise.

Regular visits to the veterinarian for check-ups and necessary vaccinations are essential for maintaining Khao Manee. Without this, it’s impossible to monitor their health and promptly identify any issues.Khao Manee are a breed that thrives in both city apartments and country houses. If kept in a city, be sure to install protective screens or barriers to prevent your cat from falling out of windows or balconies. Also, make sure there are no dangerous items or toxic plants accessible to the cat in the apartment. If you live in the countryside, consider installing a fence in your yard or a separate pavilion so your white beauty can enjoy the outdoors without danger. If space allows, set up play areas and specially designed play complexes for cats on your property. These will help your cat get physical exercise even in your absence.

The connection between ear and eye.

In heterochromatic Khao Manee, only the ear on the side of the eye with the blue cornea is deaf.

Training and Education

Use positive reinforcement: Khao Manees respond positively to praise, affection, and treats, so use these as rewards during training. Reward your cat for following commands and exhibiting desired behaviors.

Start with simple commands: Begin training with basic commands such as “sit,” “stay,” or “give a paw.” This will help your Khao Manee understand the training process and learn to respond to your cues.

Use a clicker or tongue click: Cats can easily learn to associate the sound of a click or clicker with a reward. Stick to a specific sound when your cat performs a desirable action, and reward them immediately after.

Limit training sessions: Cats have relatively short attention spans, so keep training sessions short and frequent, especially at the beginning. Gradually increase the duration of sessions as your cat becomes more resilient to training.

Be patient and persistent: Even with a positive approach and ease of learning, some commands or skills may require more time and practice. Be persistent and don’t give up; give your Khao Manee enough time to master new skills.

Remember individuality: Each Khao Manee may have their unique personality and approach to learning. Consider your cat’s individual preferences, skills, and limits when planning training.Learn to read body language and signals: Cats express their emotions and moods through body language. Learn to read your Khao Manee’s signals and adapt your training methods according to their comfort and needs.Remember that much of the success of training depends on your patience, consistency, and understanding of your Khao Manee’s uniqueness. Enjoy the learning process and strengthen your bond with your cat through positive training experiences.

How to Choose a Kitten

Khao Manee cats are generally more expensive than cats of other breeds. This is mainly attributed to their rarity and high demand. Choosing a kitten from a cattery means that its price will definitely be above average. This fact should always be kept in mind when browsing ads for kittens for sale online, where similar cats with white fur are often offered at lower prices.

Khao Manee cats have specific exterior requirements outlined in standards. Before purchasing, it is essential to study these and assess the actual appearance of the kittens and their parents during your visit. Khao Manee is known for its characteristic “smile” and friendliness. If something different is offered, it’s better not to proceed with the deal.

It is known that “snow-white diamonds” can exhibit particular sensitivity to various noises. Individual cats may respond differently to sounds, but there are some common signs that can be observed to assess the hearing of a Khao Manee:

A Khao Manee will immediately respond to sound stimuli by moving its ears, then seek the source and observe it-this can indicate good hearing;

The check should be conducted in a calm environment and from different angles to avoid errors;

If the kitten does not respond to sounds, this may indicate hearing issues. In this case, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian to ensure there are no problems or to reconsider the purchase altogether. It is important to note that the response to sounds can be individual for each Khao. Some may be more sensitive to sounds, while others may show less reaction.

Health and Diseases

Natural pathways of the Khao Manee breed have endowed these snow-white cats with stable health. They are not affected by certain genetic disorders, as can be seen in some publications. The white coat is an undeniable asset, not a reason to speculate about their immunity.

However, about 1/3 of the “white diamonds” are still born deaf. But this is not a problem unique to this breed; it is a common issue among all cats with white fur. Typically, this manifests within a week after birth. For “snow-white” cats with different eye colors, the ear on the side of the blue eye is often the one that can’t hear.

When it comes to the best choice of catteries in Russia, there are very few both in our country and worldwide. However, if you purchase a kitten from a cattery, you need not worry about its hearing-owners will definitely provide all necessary documents confirming the conducted tests.

Food allergies that may arise in these precious white cats are likely caused by the surrounding atmosphere or a poor diet. They dislike tobacco smoke, strong perfume scents, and a poor ecological environment, so it’s important to avoid exposing them to such places.

Adhering to a vaccination schedule, timely deworming, and actively participating in the cat’s life significantly improves its quality and longevity.
