Breed Description

It is officially accepted that the Devon Rex originated in Devonshire, named after the county itself. However, little is mentioned about the neighboring county of Cornwall, where about ten years earlier, cats with curly coats – a result of mutation – had already been documented. This is hardly surprising, as the unique landscape of Devonshire is steeped in mystery. Around 6,000 years BCE, humans settled in these areas, and remnants of their long-lost settlements have survived to this day. In Devonshire, a black kitten was accidentally found by an elderly and kind-hearted woman named Beryl Cox, who took her in and later had a litter. Among the kittens was another black one, but with curly fur, and it was this kitten that garnered all the fame. The “first” (read: officially documented) Devon Rex was named Curly. It is claimed that he possessed nearly the same breed characteristics as today’s Devons. According to official sources, this occurred in 1959. Appearance

At first sight, a Devon Rex evokes mixed feelings. Its unusual appearance either captivates or repels instantly, and in both cases, the impression is lasting. Everywhere, comparisons are made between Devons and alien beings, elves, and other fairy-tale characters-and that’s fine. Newcomers often confuse them with Don or Canadian Sphynx cats, especially when they are still very small.

In Russia, this breed is still not very common and is considered exotic. Therefore, choosing a kitten from a cattery is not so easy. Small in size, with very short and slightly curly fur and whiskers, Devons weigh between 2.5 to 4.5 – 4.7 kg, and they are very muscular and physically strong. Their height at the withers does not exceed 25 – 26 cm, while the total length from the nose tip to the tail tip can reach 72 – 75 cm.

Devon Rexes are most prevalent in the USA and Canada, where local feline experts are working hard to enhance their main characteristics: “curliness,” distinctive head and ear shapes, and lifespan. On average, they live 13 – 16 years, but some cats surpass 18.

It is known that the Devon Rex is one of the most photogenic cats in the world.

It resembles the shape of a wide wedge, with the relief of the skull clearly visible. Some owners compare its shape to that of a human heart. Its width is almost equal to its length. It is set on a thin, elegant neck. When viewed from the front, one can see diamond-shaped outlines.

Short, with a clearly defined stop. The forehead has a rounded shape, and the size of the bridge of the nose does not exceed 1/4 of the head length. The cheeks are plump. The mustache is very short, quite dense, and often curled, similar to the main coat of fur. The chin is well-developed.

Very large, sitting deep and wide. The edges are rounded and may have small "fringes." This is not considered a virtue, but it is also not recognized as a defect. On the outside, there is the softest, suede-like bristle. They are one of the breed's main advantages.

The large, olive-shaped eyes, widely spaced apart, give the face a surprised and slightly frightened expression. The iris can vary in shades of yellow or emerald depending on the coat color, with yellow-green being the most common. Strabismus is considered a defect.

Well-defined cheekbones and a rather strong chin do not disrupt the overall proportions of the head. Generally, a scissor bite is observed, where the upper canines overlap the lower ones. If an individual has an overbite or underbite, it negatively affects their appearance.

Medium-sized, with a skeleton of fine bone or slightly closer to average density, the ribcage is wide and quite massive. Powerful musculature, especially in males. Despite the fine bone, the body is very sturdy, with a strong back and no sagging.

Strong, although they might not make such an impression at first glance. They are broad-built, with the front legs somewhat shorter than the hind legs. The paw pads are oval, the toes are short and pressed together. There is practically no fur between the toes. Extra toes on the legs are grounds for disqualification at shows. Quite long and thin, but not like a whip. It looks very harmonious. The tip is rounded and is completely covered with very short fur. Bald spots, densifications, or bends on the tail are unacceptable. Too long fur on it is considered grounds for disqualification.

Extremely short, as the covering (guard) hair is practically absent, wavy, and very soft. Noticeably denser on the back, while on the chest, neck, and abdomen it is significantly sparser, but without bald patches. On the limbs, the fur is somewhat thicker and more voluminous than in other areas.

The standard does not regulate this, as the breed's gene pool is still quite limited. Solid colors are allowed: white, black, blue, cream, peach, chocolate, and others, as well as bicolor, pointed, tortoiseshell, and tabby (with patterns).

Character

Practically every photo of Devon Rex cats captures them looking distant, almost like martians. However, in everyday life, they are very sociable cats with an easygoing temperament. They have the most tender and affectionate feelings towards their owners, resembling dogs in their behaviors and even in their outlook on the world. Being at your feet isn’t just for oriental cats. Devons follow their owners like a tail, watching closely and trying to converse in their “martian” language.

Curious, curly-eared little creatures strive to personally investigate the contents of bags brought home. Sometimes, they even attempt to “explore” the contents of the newspaper their owner is reading. Want to peek into a cupboard? No problem-their agile paws can open the cupboard door where cat food is stored.

It’s clear they aren’t the type of cats that wander about on their own. This should be kept in mind before deciding to adopt a kitten from a shelter. Quite clever, they instantly find entertainment when they sense their owners are preoccupied. In other words, they are quite the little inventors, ensuring they never run out of fun.

It has been noted that their desire to climb and hide in cupboards, washing machines, or laundry baskets is their “trademark.” They especially enjoy creating such hideouts during their owners’ lengthy absences. These curly-eared dwellers miss their owners during this time and seek out a hiding place to feel safe. While many people can adopt a kitten from a shelter, busy individuals should remember that Devon Rex cats do not handle loneliness well. It makes sense to adopt two kittens so they won’t feel so lonely; otherwise, the personality of the little cat may suffer.

Some cat lovers argue that two kittens will grow jealous of each other when it comes to their owner, potentially leading to conflict. However, this is not the case. Don’t rush and expect everything to work within 10-14 days. It might not come together at all. But during these training sessions, the loving gaze of your kitten and its big attentive ears tuning into your voice will ensure that the time isn’t wasted.

Advertisements for the sale of Devon Rex kittens appear quite frequently, but reputable breeders are relatively few. To avoid mistakes, also pay attention to the shape of the head. Cornish Rexes have a more elongated head than Devons, almost “Oriental” in appearance.

Surprisingly, maternal milk can be deadly for a kitten. This tragedy can occur when the kitten has a different blood type than its mother. This risk is present in 50% of cases, unlike other breeds. Considering this, breeders need to ascertain the blood type of the potential “bride” or “groom” beforehand.

At a very young age, curly-haired kittens from Devon can exhibit muscle weakness. Typically, between one month and six months old, a kitten can become so weak that it cannot feed itself. These are symptoms of myopathy, which breeders have mostly managed to address. Timely DNA screenings for this ailment help avoid the issue. If a mutation is found in the genes, that animal is simply excluded from further breeding.

Adult Devon Rexes are among the most affected by cardiomyopathy. Unfortunately, this illness is incurable, leading to heart failure and death. Early diagnosis and properly tailored treatment at a veterinary clinic can help slow the disease’s progression and ease the care of the affected individual.

Regrettably, hereditary coagulopathy is also on the list of immune vulnerabilities. It directly relates to diet, particularly a deficiency in vitamin K.
